Four Sisters and a Wedding
Released in 2013, Four Sisters and a Wedding has become an iconic, cult classic for Filipino film enthusiasts—and rightfully so! Not only does it feature well-known actors and actresses of our generation, but it is the story that captured the hearts and minds of audiences with its heartfelt portrayal of sisterhood, family conflicts and dynamics, and emotional moments that continue to resonate years after its release. Especially for young Filipino girls, this film emphasizes on the portrayal of strong, independent, and hard-working women who are unafraid to speak their truth. Featuring female characters with different and complex personalities, it gives the characters depth and nuance despite the fact they’re initially introduced where you know it’s based on a stereotype. This shows young Filipino girls that it’s okay if the way you are is contradictory! It’s okay if you’re “unconventional” and “hard to understand”, because it’s totally possible to be two things at once! Just like Bea Alonzo’s character of Bobby, a woman can definitely be assertive with her career and her beliefs, but also tender-hearted when it comes to family. Girls are allowed to feel and explore every side of themselves, embracing both their flaws and strengths without apology. We should never be constrained into one role, because just like anybody else, we are multifaceted and capable of growth and development as we redefine ourselves every step of the way.
